What James Likes Best

What James Likes Best

Written and Illustrated by Amy Schwartz

Published by Atheneum Books, 2003

This charming book is about James and his loving family as they travel in many different ways to visit friends and family.  Along the way, he experiences different activities, people, toys and food, and the narrator steps outside the narrative to ask the readers what they think are James’ favorite things.  In this way, the reader is asked to decide “what James likes best” but really, they end up choosing what he or she likes best from James’ visits.

This book would be a great pick for young kids as they learn about transportation in cities, where James lives.  He travels to different places in different ways, and it could spark an interesting discussion about the experiences of children and the times they have ridden in different types of transportation.
