LIttle Dog and Duncan

By Kristine O’Connell George

Illustrated by June Otani

Published by Clarion Books, 1999

This sweet book of poems is a companion book to the Little Dog series of books, and continues the adventures of Little Dog when a big dog comes to visit. This book is great to compare the two animals, and see how they are alike and different, but also accept that they are different but can still be friends.

Great for small children, (pre-k) who are learning the tenets of friendship and acceptance of others that are different from them.

A Home for Bird

By Philip C. Stead

Image

Published by Roaring Book Press, 2012

Talk about falling in love!  This tender, adorable book sucked me in with the plot, and I stayed for the exquisite art, rendered in (I think) watercolor pencils.  Vernon, a frog, befriends a wayward wooden cuckoo bird that (no surprise) doesn’t speak.  He and his friends think that perhaps the bird doesn’t talk because he is homesick.  Vernon sets off with the bird on a mission to find its home.  Happy happenstance brings them both to the cuckoo clock from which the bird had fallen, and at last, the bird speaks.  Vernon has saved the day.

Great book for looking at perspective and perception.  Vernon thinks that Bird is alive, while the reader knows that he is not (dramatic irony).  Because Vernon is trying so hard and sacrificing so much for this lifeless wooden bird, it is so gratifying that the bird finally “speaks” at the end of the book and makes Vernon happy.  This is also a book about selflessness and friendship, and tugs at the heartstrings.

Gossie and Gertie

Gossie and Gertie

Written and Illustrated by Olivier Dunrea

Published by Houghton Mifflin, 2002

Gossie and Gertie are two best friends.  “Wherever Gossie goes, Gertie goes too.”  At least, for a time.  What happens when these two best friends decide to take separate paths?  Will their friendship be the same?  Will Gossie be able to compromise when he’s no longer the leader?

This ink and watercolor picture book is so simply rendered, yet the images of Gossie and Gertie and their closeness is heart-wrenchingly sweet.  This is a great book to use with children when discussing the roles that we play with our friends and family.  It is also a great book for discussing the concept of relationship independence and compromise.
