The Happy Day

By Ruth Krauss
Illustrated by Marc Simont
Published by Harper Collins, 1949

All the animals are snug in their dens, and cozy for the winter, when they all wake up and smell…something. Soon, all the animals, from the big bears to the tiny snails are racing and sniffing to see what it is: the first spring flower.
This book is a great book to celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring for all ages.

The Village Garage

by G. Brian Karas

Image

This book follows a garage crew through the seasons as they take care of the tasks that keep the town running, such as plowing snow, blowing leaves, and cutting grass.  Each season holds different challenges, and the crew takes them on with smiles on their faces.

Good book to address different types of equipment and the jobs that are done by city and county employees to take care of its citizens.  Also a good book to address seasons.

Old Bear

Old Bear

By Kevin Henkes

old bear

Published by Greenwillow Books, 2008

Old bear is hibernating for the winter.  While he sleeps, he dreams of being a cub again, and  all his favorite seasons.  The way he remembers them is not true to reality, but illustrates his lively imagination as a young bear.  How wonderful it would be if a rained blueberries, or that all the springtime leaves were butterflies!  When he wakes, he lumbers outside into the lush springtime panorama, almost unable to believe that he is not still dreaming.

Science SOL 1.7 addresses changing seasons, an apt subject for the introduction to this book.
