The Curious Garden

By Peter Brown
Published by Little, Brown Books, 2009
Peter Brown hits it out of the park with this book. Liam, a curious little boy, discovers an abandoned railway in the middle of a cement city. There, a few stunted plants are trying to grow. Though he doesn’t have any gardening experience, Liam does his best to nurture the plants, and soon they spread. The curious garden is personified as it spreads, for it wants to see the whole city. Soon, the garden is not only sprouting plants all over the city, but it also sprouts something else: gardeners. Soon, the city is green again, and the power of plants is manifested in a beautiful, green expanse.
Great for kids who dream big– terrific for discussion on how hard work can make dreams come true. Also a great springboard for discussion on environmentalism for older elementary and middle school.
