Old Burt Dow used to be a deep water fisherman. Though technically he is retired, he still goes out in his rickety wooden fishing boat and casts his line to fish for food. In this epic journey, he accidentally hooks a whale fin, is capsized by a storm, swallowed (and subsequently sneezed out) of a whale, surrounded by a huge pod of whales who want matching band-aids on their fins, just like the first one received. After all of that, he makes it home safely– and in time for dinner.
This lengthy book is more appropriate for slightly older elementary readers, probably 2nd grade or so, because it will probably keep their attention better. The onomatopoeia will capture the hearts of hearers and they will be able to say the words along.
