Outside Over There

by Maurice Sendak

Published by Harper and Row, 1981

A young girl is in charge of her little sister, and when she isn’t looking, her sister is kidnapped by faceless little gremlins and taken to a fantastical place.  The girl tracks them down before her sister can be married off, devises a way to extract her sister, and bring her safely home.

Great book for all ages.  The creepy dark quality is possibly more appropriate for older elementary kids. Speaks to the responsibility that the older sibling often feels for the younger, especially when the parents seem absent.
