Madeline is the youngest of twelve girls living in a Paris boarding school. One night, she is struck with appendicitis and is taken to the hospital, where she undergoes an operation at stays during her recovery.  The other girls miss her very much, and decide that they also want their appendixes out so they can stay at a hospital, too.

A classic picturebook, this is a great book for young children and introduces them to a time and culture not their own.
