Drummer Hoff

Adapted by Barbara Emberley

Illustrated by Ed Emberley

Published by Prentice Hall, 1967

Written in a lyrical, poetic form, this book tells the story how Drummer Hoff fired the cannon on the battlefield– but he couldn’t have done it alone!  Each page adds another layer to the story and then repeats the elements from the previous pages.  In brightly-pigmented woodcuts, it’s no surprise that this book is an award-winner.

Great book for seeing what children can remember from previous pages and help “read” the book by repeating the events that came before.
