Sugar and her mother are very close, and Sugar loves to hear her mama’s stories each night before she falls asleep. But Sugar’s mama goes away, and Sugar misses her and misses her stories. Her mother is in prison, and she can only periodically visit her. On their birthday, Mama gives her a present: a notebook filled with one story for each day of the week. This way, Sugar can hear her mother’s voice each night as she prepares to sleep.
This book is a heartbreaking, tender look at how a prison sentence tears families apart, and how the unconditional love of a mother and a child strives to overcome the obstacles of distance and separation. This would be a good book for 8th grade Civics, when they address the judicial and penal systems.
