Feathers for Lunch

by Lois Ehlert

Published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1990

The cat gets out and wants a bird for lunch instead of his usual canned food.  However, the different birds he encounters are all too smart for him!  They realize they have wings and can fly high out of the reach of the cat.  That means that no matter how hard he tries, all he will get is– you guessed it– feathers for lunch.

Identification of North American flora and fauna make this picture book more than just a cute story.  Each bird is labeled, as well as the different types of plants in the Eric Carle-style cutout images.  Students studying the biology of their area can identify the different types of birds, and in 3rd grade, students can identify the carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
